The Different Types of Retirement Homes Available in America

assisted living facilities

There are many types of retirement homes available in America. An LORC license is required for a CCRC to operate. NORCS do not have a design or plan, but they are often located in rural locations. LORC residents can live in rural settings while still enjoying the benefits of urban living. These two types of retirement communities, however, are not suitable for all. In fact, not all CCRCs have the same quality of care.

LORCs have an age-homogeneous design

LORCs are a retirement community that is age-homogeneous, where residents are often the same age. LORCs, while they may be heterogeneous in their population, are also age-homogeneous. They serve a large population of older Americans. One important axis of retirement community classification is whether the community was planned or not. There are two types, naturally occurring and planned, of retirement communities in America.

Subsidized CCRCs

CCRCs provide a subsidized retirement community that is open to all who meet certain criteria. A CCRC can be a great place to live for the long-term. Although it's possible to move to another community, most CCRCs maintain the same basic application process. Residents must complete a comprehensive health history and a family medical history. This information assists CCRCs in determining the level care a resident requires in the near future.

NORCS cannot be planned or designed

While NORCS do not have the same long-term care facilities and programs, there are similarities among the two types. These facilities are purpose-built and designed to offer residents a wide range of amenities and services. The contract they have with a community defines the level of service that is available. These services may not be available to residents of a NORC. Instead, they are required to be integrated into the existing structure. The residents of NORCs did not make their selection based on the level of services offered, which means that their preferences for services are likely different from those of other people in the community.

Assisted living retirement communities provide a moderate level of care

Congregate housing and assisted living communities offer a moderate amount of care. Each resident lives in an apartment, or suite equipped with emergency signaling devices. Living rooms and dining areas are shared by residents. While residents in these communities receive minimal care, some amenities may be provided, such as meals prepared by a central kitchen and organized recreational activities. Security services are also available.
